Five days and Five Nights of riding and camping along the trail. Moving our herd of horses and mules.
Saddle up with John and Tammy Summers and the crew of the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit on a fast-paced and exciting tradition...the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit Horse Drive! On this "old-time" working trail drive, we move our herd of horses and mules between our winter pastures in the Owens Valley and our summer headquarters located in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Traveling along the same trails that were used by horsemen and cowboys of the past, you are sure to find adventure around every bend and live part of the West with us.
During the four or five day drive, we camp out along the trail and
enjoy full-service camps with hearty and delicious chuck wagon
meals prepared by our cooks. When the sun sets and the stock is
settled for the night, the evenings are filled with campfires, cowboy
entertainment, and camaraderie as we share experiences from
the drive and take time to relax in camp after the day in the saddle.
Along the trail each day, you will have a true cowboy riding experience and as noon approaches, the lunch wagon and crew provides a buffet style meal as we water the stock, fill our bellies, and take a short break before continuing the drive.
You don't need to be a cowboy or cowgirl to enjoy and be a part of all that the horse drive has to offer, but basic riding experience and knowledge is necessary. As all riders are a working part of the crew and will be spending long working hours in the saddle at the walk, trot, lope, and run, Western trail riding experience and/or lessons covering all horseback gates (walk, trot, and lope) are advised before participating in this event. Also, please confirm that you are in good health and physical condition before deciding to join us as your well being is important to us.
Throughout the drive, our competant staff will help guests with their riding skills and knowledge to help improve your horsemanship and abilities and become a more confident and capable rider and addition to our crew. You will also learn about the mechanics of driving horses and herd behavior while helping moving our stock.
Your horse and Western style saddle will be assigned to each rider based on the information you have provided us with including size and ability. We strive to make sure that you and your horse become an integral part of our drive and a team together, but if there are any problems with the match up, our staff will do all that is possible to make your drive, equipment, and horse one that you like, work well with, and will remember. (Riders may bring their own personal Western saddles, bridles, and accessories; however, the Head Wrangler will have final approval of all gear and equipment before its use.)
The dress code for the drive is rugged, cowboy attire (Western brimmed hat, Western style shirts and outer layers, denim pants or jeans, riding boots, etc) and be sure that you plan your clothing accordingly for possible cool evenings as well as warm days.
You will also want to bring along a warm sleeping bag, sleeping pad or air mattress, a tent, as well as any other personal gear that you may want during the trip (Please pack your gear in a stout, soft duffle style bag, limit each duffle bag to 30 pounds, and be sure to label your tent, sleeping bag, and all bags with your name). Feel free to use our check list to make sure that you have everything you will need to enjoy the drive.
For those of you who are musically inclined, musical instruments are welcome and, for everyone, remember...don't forget your camera!
We hope you will choose to join us on our next Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit Horse Drive and we look forward to sharing this unique Western experience with you!
